Okay, so it’s MOVIE NIGHT AGAIN! Today, Marc and I are reviewing a recent film that we both love. (We had so much fun last week, we decided to make this a regular feature).
Some background:
Genre: Superhero-SF
Who it stars: ALL THE STARZ! Um, seriously, Robert Downy Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner, etc., Samuel L. Jackson
When it was released: 2012
From IMDB: Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.
Our Dissection:
Marc: Hello all, get your snacks, Yasmine’s nuts or popcorn for me and let’s settle in for a movie.
Yasmine: I don’t have nuts. I’m a girl. *innocent koff* OH, you mean THAT kind…never mind. *munches on pecans*
Marc: Due to the fact that Iron Man 3 will be out shortly, we thought we’d do the Avengers, as IM3 is the first Marvel film since.
Yasmine: Sounds good to me—I love the Iron Man movies. And the Avengers. And Thor. Especially Thor. But not so much Captain America. Did I mention I loved Thor?
Marc: So the Avengers! Also known as the first Hulk movie that didn’t completely suck. I think Yasmine has her own title for it too.
Yasmine: You mean the Pretty Damned Cool Superhero Movie With Thor In It?
Marc: As some of you may know, I’m a bit of a comic book nerd, so here goes. The Avengers were created in 1963 by Stan Lee and the late great Jack Kirby, the original line up being Thor, Ironman, The Hulk, Antman and The Wasp. With Captain America joining them a couple of issues later . Who, who, I hear you saying. Well, stop it, that’s Cicely’s job. Hollywood for whatever reason decided to change the line up, I don’t think they did badly.
Yasmine: Thanks to the plug to my character, dude.
(For those who didn’t get it, shame on you!). I like comic books, especially Thor (yeah, I know, I’m becoming annoyingly focused here), and the X-Men (Wolverine…now he’s…Thor-worthy). But I am bowing to your expertise here. Do continue.
Marc: I’m not going to go over the casting, that’s really not something I obsess over and besides, it had all been set in stone before they even started on The Avengers.
Yasmine: I have to say—the casting of the guy for the Hulk impressed the hell out of me. I hate to say it, but Ang Lee’s Hulk movies sucked royal. I love some of his other work, but he just didn’t cut it with the CGI mess that tried to pass for our favorite Green Giant. I would watch a Hulk movie with the new Bruce Banner in it.
Marc: Where to start? It’s an epic tale, packed with great characters, it has an enormous bonus in that it doesn’t have to worry about back story for the majority of its characters, all that having been set up prior.
Yasmine: Even if you haven’t seen the other movies, you can watch the Avengers. A friend of mine hadn’t seen any of them and she liked the Avengers just fine. Epic? Yes. Great characters? Yes. And great chemistry between the actors.
Marc: The effects, oh my god. The effects. I gasped when the helicarrier lifted from the water. Yes, I’m a big fan of physical effects, but the CGI in this was just about seamless to me.
Yasmine: Agreed. The CGI was really well done and—IMO—not overdone, which can be just as bad.
Marc: Without a doubt, my favourite scenes in this involved the Hulk. Once with Thor and once with Loki. The scene where he casually smacks him sideways and the other when the hulk treats Loki like a rag doll. How about you Yasmine?
Yasmine: Those were great scenes. I also LOVE the fight scene downtown. EPIC—those flying robot-creatures were incredible. (I dunno what they were called, I don’t care—they were too cool!). And one of my fave quotes from that scene, “I’m bringing the party to you.” –Iron Man. And Bruce Banner’s reply to Captain America saying, “You might want to get angry…” “That’s my secret, Captain. I’m always angry.” Also…Captain America telling Hulk, “Hulk…Smash.” And then…Thor—calling down the lightning! LOVE lightning. LOVE Thor. Thor and lightning together? Yah. Um…yes, some great scenes. LOL
Marc: Traditionally, these Marvel movies have an end scene, The Avengers has two. If you haven’t seen them, I’m not going to tell you, and if you have, but don’t know what was going on, you’ll have to look around the Internet a bit
Yasmine: What he said.
Marc: So, Yasmine, think you’ll see the inevitable sequel?
Yasmine: Does a panther have fangs and claws? *grins* I’m SO ready for Iron Man 3—I LOVE the Iron Man movies. And Thor 2—can’t get enough of the blond bombshell. And Avengers 2? I will so be there. But I probably won’t see the second Captain America, to be honest.
Marc: I think that about wraps it up until next time boys and girls. Excelsior!
